All-inclusive Junior Summer Camps Launch at Club Med Sandpiper in June

Miami (April 27, 2009) – On June 27, Club Med Sandpiper in Port St. Lucie, Florida will begin welcoming children 12 years and older to participate in full-time Elite Tennis Academy. Geared towards junior players aspiring to play on the pro tour circuit or to receive a Division NCAA scholarship, the camps will run in one and two week sessions.

“The camps challenge players on a daily basis, preparing them to compete with other top-ranked juniors in national and international tournaments,” comments Luis Miguel Nascimento, Club Med Junior Tennis program director. “But, after the players have met those challenges, Club Med encourages them to become kids again and participate in afternoon activities like sailing, flying trapeze, archery and rollerblading. This helps players achieve balance and become well-rounded adults.”

The tennis programs will run for eight weeks, from June 27 to August 22, 2009, with coursework running Monday through Friday during the seven night stay. Juniors must register in one of the four levels of instruction: beginner, intermediate, advanced and elite.

Grand Slam Tennis Partners, a world class tennis management company, has assembled a team of international experts to coach the aspiring players. Coaching staff includes Manny Dominguez, coach of ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) player Nuno Marques and former tennis director at the Doral Country Club; Luis Miguel Nascimento, coach of Portuguese national champion Pedro Cordeiro; Boris Bosnjakovic, who worked with Jelena Jankovic in 2008 and Antonio van Grichen, private coach for Victoria Azarenka.

For five hours daily, the players will follow a comprehensive program that improves technique, endurance, competition, athletic performance, fitness and mental conditioning. Working with the same core group of coaches everyday in a one-to-four instructor to student ratio, juniors will focus on improving all aspects of their game with consistency. Students will also train with their peers and engage in ladder and practice games to gain experience competing against players of different levels and styles.

After an early morning breakfast, players will hone their skills in three hour morning sessions and two hour afternoon sessions. From the late afternoon until lights out, Club Med staff will engage the juniors in a variety of on-site activities tailored to ‘tweens and teens. Professional camp counselors will provide 24 hour supervision of the players and enforce a strict rules and regulations policy.

Seven–night, all-inclusive Elite Tennis Academies and Camps at Sandpiper start at $1,285 per junior based on occupancy of four participants per room. Local juniors looking to improve their tournament results may attend a day camp starting at $650 per player. Call Gabriela Medves at 1-800-232-3413 to request an application and complete registration.

In an effort to help build community before the camp’s launch, Club Med’s recently launched social media site, ClubMedInsider.com, invites participating juniors to create a profile, post questions and meet other players before the academy begins.

Club Med’s Ship Brings Intimacy to Caribbean and Mediterranean Cruising

(Miami, Fl—April 13, 2009) This summer, Club Med will unveil its newly refurbished cruise ship, the Club Med II. The $4 million dollar overhaul is a continuation of Club Med’s ongoing commitment to cater to upscale leisure travelers. With 46 winter destinations in the Caribbean and 70 summer options in the Mediterranean, the newly renovated ship offers intimate refinement and ports of call rarely found in the cruise industry. The distinctive suites, refurbished cabins, new spa, attentive crew members and complimentary evening champagne combine to offer an outstanding cruise.  With a capacity of 372 passengers, guests will enjoy personalized service in an intimate setting. The Club Med II accepts children eight and older.

Design

Designer Sophie Jacqmin conceived the new interior layout to reflect the ship’s warm and personal atmosphere. The design draws on the stories of explorers, their epic journeys and the majestic vessels they sailed in. The Moby Dick bar features a sperm whale’s tail in wood, while old maps, navigation devices and deck gear grace the walls of Le Méditerranée restaurant. In the Magellan restaurant, Jacqmin reproduced a world map in gold, coral and black, allowing diners to trace the routes of the great navigators while the Pacific lounge integrates elements of a classic Remington typewriter and has a feel akin to that of an English club. The vessel’s 186 renovated cabins convey the intimate feel of a travel log. Ten new suites, each a spacious haven of 388 square feet, are complete with state-of-the-art features. In certain ports of call, the stern of the five mast beauty opens up to provide guests with a private marina to enjoy a variety of water sports with the expert assistance of Club Med staff.

Indulgence

The new Club Med Spa by Carita overlooks the ocean, allowing guests to relax from one of the finest spots on the ship. The spa offers an oasis of well-being, featuring five sea view cabins, a private hair salon and a relaxation area. Carita-trained beauty experts provide exclusive care and custom advice in the subtle, elegant surroundings.

Seas and Seasons

In winter, the Club Med II tours the Caribbean, with the option to visit 46 tropical gems. From quaint, off-the-beaten-path stops in Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama, to elegant escapes in the Antilles, guests can choose from 21 different cruise itineraries. Those who wish to combine “sea and sand” can choose to stay at a Club Med resort for a portion of their vacation.

In summer, the Club Med II glides through the Mediterranean to 70 regular ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Croatia and Libya.  The ship also offers 12 unique destinations featuring natural wonders and historical sites, including two new routes to the ancient Egyptian capital of Alexandria (Athens–Alexandria and Alexandria–Nice). Passengers will marvel at a host of high-class performances including the Moscow Circus Stars, Cirque du Soleil, Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde, Las Vegas magicians and the Magnifica brass quintet. For a quick getaway, mini-cruises are also available along the coasts of Corsica and Italy. Guests looking to sail the Mediterranean can chose among 28 different cruise itineraries.

And for those looking for a rare and timeless cruise, each spring the Club Med II sails one transatlantic cruise, with ports of call in Cuba, Bermuda, the Azores and Portugal.

For more information about the Club Med II, or to make a reservation, call 1-800-ClubMed, visit www.clubmed.us or contact a travel professional.  For an insider look at Club Med’s offerings visit Club Med’s newly launched social media site at www.ClubMedInsider.com.

Club Med Engages Tikes with Innovative Petit Tennis Program

leave a comment »

Young Guests Role Play to Learn Tennis at Club Med Resorts in the Americas

(Miami—Feb. 3, 2009) Club Med, renowned for its award-winning children’s programs, offers an innovative approach to teaching little ones the game of tennis with its Petit Tennis program.

Club Med’s Petit Tennis method engages children ages three to seven in role play to introduce them to the forehand, volley, serve and backhand volley. The program creates images and stories for the tennis equipment, techniques and boundaries to teach the pillars of the game. Colorful storybooks also add excitement and feed youngsters’ imaginations.

Petit Tennis is the brainchild of former tennis pros, Jean Phillipe and Sybile Fleurian. In 2001, Jean Phillipe and his wife, Sybile, founded Petit Tennis with the goal of teaching the game to young children—and actually crafted the curriculum with their two young daughters in mind.

“We saw tennis steadily declining in popularity among children in the U.S.,” remarked Mr. Fleurian,. “With daughters aged three and five years old, we felt a great urgency to pass on our love of the sport to them. So we became very creative parents and began brainstorming new training techniques.”

With the goal of nurturing a strong emotional bond to tennis at a very early age, the couple consulted sports psychologists, child development specialists and tennis trainers from the French Tennis Federation. They created a series of stories, colorful books, games, small-format courts and age-adapted equipment like large inflatable balls, lower nets, and bigger rackets.

“Children as young as three and a half wait impatiently to fly yellow ducklings over a mountain to find the mother duck. They shout in relief as their duck flies safely above the crocodile lurking at the foot of the mountain,” he explained. “And when their duckling returns, the odyssey begins again. These children are not engrossed in a Chinese fable or a high tech video game, they are playing tennis.”

“Giving young children imagination and a court and equipment adapted to them encourages success and keeps them from getting discouraged,” added Ms. Fleurian. “The kids we work with at Club Med excitedly return to Petit Tennis every day of their vacation.”

Club Med offers Petit Tennis five days per week at its Ixtapa Pacific, Sandpiper, Punta Cana, Cancun Yucatan, Rio das Pedras, Trancoso and Itaparica resorts at no additional cost to families. The Fleurians also offer a nine month Petit Tennis curriculum for use in schools and sports federations in more than 16 countries. They will launch Petit Tennis and Golf camps for children at Club Med Sandpiper this summer. For more information on Petit Tennis programs go to www.lepetittennis.com

Club Med offers additional programs for children ages four months to 17-years that encourage learning about local cultures, exploring nature’s beauty and practicing a variety of sports. Children are divided into small groups according to their age and interests to participate in programs such as Petit Tennis, Petit Chef, Circus School, Hip Hop Kidz and Lil’ Explorers Science Club. Additional activities include flying trapeze, golf lessons, soccer, sailing, rollerblading and archery. For more information on Club Med, visit www.clubmed.us
